The journey to
EBC starts from Kathmandu, a short 30 minutes flight from the capital city to
Lukla initiates the EBC expedition. As the flight lands in Lukla of Khumbu
region; trekkers may take some rest and have food made available by the locals.
There are variety of meal options at the local market for both vegetarians and
those who love meat; though, trekkers are advised to refrain from eating meat
products as probability of getting an upset stomach is high.
So the journey
to EBC has officialy started, now the next step is to get to Phakding and this
would normally take about 2 to 3 hours. Trekkers will walk along the bank of
the famously known Dudh Koshi river and steadily climb the generous mountain,
this is very modest climb. There are few suspension bridges along the way, this
is quite a decent walk and not much of a challenge. After continuing for
another 2 or so hours you will reach Monjo village.
After spending a
night at Monjo Village, trekkers will now head to Namche bazar, this may take
upto 3 to 4 hours depending upon your pace! It is an easy walk as Namche Bazar
is quite near to Monjo Village. The uphill climbing starts once you cross the
two of the famous suspension bridges know to trekkers, after reaching to the
other end you will need to climb for another two hours. Now you will reach the
checkpoint where you need to make your registrations and other official
clearings. You are now only ten minutes away from Namche Bazar! This is your final destination to get all the
last moment gears, cash and food that you require for the next couple of days.
While you are at Namche bazar, you can stroll around and go visit the local
places, Buddhist monasteries and experience the local Sherpa culture.
The next day
starts early, expect this walk to get moderately difficult than the last one!
At first it is a downhill walk but after a while it is all up and up, if you
did not get the opportunity to see Everest while you were in Namche ,then along
the way now you have the chance to see the glorious mountain peeking through
the smaller ranges. As you walk for an hour, you will reach Sanasa then
continue towards the north east. As the trek progress through the trail for
another couple of hours; trekkers will now reach Tengboche. This trek may take
upto 5 hours.
After having
rest and a good night sleep, trekkers will now head to Dingboche which takes
about 4 hours to reach and is one of the shortest and easiest trek amongst all
of the above and the one to come! Trekkers may start to feel the altitude from
this point, as this place is 4,400m above sea level.
Now the next
destination is Lobuche, this is a hard climb. As the altitude begins to raise
it gets harder for trekkers to gain speed. For this reason trekkers are advised
to spend a day at Dingboche for acclimatization and as you climb higher to
Dukla that’s at 4500m, the trek gets even more challenging. After getting
through all the challenges you will reach Lobuche.
We are getting
there! This is the final walk that every EBC trekkers dream of, it will take a
minimum of 6 hours to reach EBC from Lobuche. Trekkers must first reach
Gorakshep and then pass to Mount Everest Base Camp. Trail from Lobuche to
Gorakshep is all about maintaining your pace, this trial consist of both flat
and uphill climb for about three hours straight. Trekkers will head northeast
and then finally reach the most awaited
Mount Everest Base Camp!
It is a tough
and challenging trail but it’s worth taking the risk! How many people in the
world can proudly say that they have been up close to Mount Everest? Well, take
this as a challenge or an opportunity; all that counts in the end is your will
power and the endurance you have to take up a quest and acing it!! Trekking in
Nepal is always a fun and challenging thing to do and this EBC trek tops the
list!
